Tenting at the Lewis Tops

Tenting at the Lewis Tops Idyllically nestled in the Lewis Pass is an ideal place to gaze upon tall mountainous peaks, picturesque tarns and camp at the doorstep of some amazing alpine scenery.
Starting opposite the St James car park, a large group of 17 people from the Christchurch Tramping Club made their way through beech forest to the Lewis Tops.
The trip started at 863m/2831ft and rises to 1678m/5505ft at the top of ‘The Apprentice.’ En route there are a multitude of varying sized tarns and awesome views of the surrounding mountains. We camped near a stream at the base of Mt Technical and The Apprentice. The ground was relatively flat, and spacious enough for our 11 tents with plenty of space between us.
On the morning of the following day, we took a short walk up to The Apprentice and eye-balled climbing Mt Technical at another time.
It’s very nice up that way, and a place I’d like to return to for further exploration.
