Fr Anto Kannampuzha VC Director of Divine Dhyana Illam Coimbatore.
Divine Retreat Center Chinthamanipudur, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu was indeed providential to begin a Vincentian Retreat Centre in Tamilnadu, precisely at Coimbatore. Rev. Fr. John Kavunkal landed on this alien soil to execute this project and started his efforts by staying in a rental house at Ondiputhur. He was in search of a site for the retreat centre. The present plot was purchased on December 23, 2002. It was Very Rev. Fr. George Arackal, the Superior General of Vincentian Congregation who laid the foundation stone for the Vincentian Ashram on August 1, 2003. The construction progressed steadily and Mar Jacob Manathodath, the Bishop of Palghat diocese, blessed the house on 26th April 2004. To add momentum to the retreat centre, Rev. Frs. Mathew Naickomparambil, George Panackal and Antony Payyappally from Divine Retreat Centre, conducted a Bible Convention in Alverna School ground, Coimbatore for five days starting from 12th May 2004. It paved the way for one-day retreats on every second Saturday in Divine Dhiyana Illam.
Very Rev. Fr. Varghese Parappuram, the Provincial Superior of the Marymatha Province laid the foundation stone for the present retreat hall. Mar Jacob Manathodath blessed this hall on 15th January 2008. It was on 21st August 2008, we began residential retreats for four days. His Excellency Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Aquinas, the Bishop of Coimbatore diocese blessed the perpetual adoration chapel and the renovated grotto on 11th December 2008 and 28th July 2009 respectively. People from every walk of the life come to this grotto in Coimbatore and recite rosaries finding refuge in Mother Mary, the finest intercessor for their struggles. After the blessing of the Grotto we began the veneration of the relics of St. Alphonsa with greater solemnity. The residential block for the retreatants was blessed by Mar Paul Alappattu, the Bishop of Ramanathapuram Diocese. To reach the retreat centre from the main road was a hazardous task in the rainy season, for the soil was absolutely clay. In divine providence, a non Christian freely offered a road to the Retreat Centre and thus today we have a beautiful approach road.
As we started Malayalam and English retreats separately from Tamil section, there arose the need for another prayer hall. We named it St. Vincent Prayer Hall and was blessed by Mar Paul Alappattu on 21st December 2012. The newly constructed residential block consisting 32 rooms was blessed by Rev. Fr. Paul Puthuva, the Provincial Superior of Marymatha Province on 26th September 2014.
