A unique painting created on a base of hand shaped aluminum (check out the metalworking video!
The gray finish you see in the start of the video is a primer, upon which acrylic paints can adhere. As you see I started with a completely different cat face and was really trying to make it work before accepting that it didn't look as good as I hoped, before switching to a more realistic face design. The new features were sketched in chalk -- this is a great tip for acrylic painting -- the white chalk can be easily brushed away from the painted surface to make adjustments, and it leaves no marks when your work resumes.
My way of painting nebula is all about the layers: thin washes of paint and regular splatters of stars, building upon one another to create a sense of swirling, colorful depths. Eyes are another favorite of mine, and I made a cut of JUST the eye painting sections for fellow ocular obsessives :)
The tongue blep at the end was a "happy accident;" in painting over the original face design the brush strokes for the previous chin were precisely positioned in the mouth to look like a tongue. I took it as the perfect touch to bring some levity to what otherwise would have been a fairly straightforward piece.
Thanks for stopping by!
