Cameron Champ's Simple Power Move

Cameron Champ's Simple Power Move I froze Cam's lead arm and reattached it to his shoulder to illustrate just how much he leans forward and down toward the ball in the backswing. This is the simple key to power.

In one I left it as is with no rotation - his clubhead goes far beyond the ball - almost to the middle of the shaft.

In the other I added some rotation as if the clubhead stayed on the ground. In this case his club would still touch the ground almost 3 feet behind the ball.

Moe Norman used to start his swing with the clubhead resting on the ground about a foot and a half behind the ball. This preset him into a forward leaning position but much less than Cameron.

To feel Cameron's forward reach touch the clubhead to the ground, on the target line 3' behind the ball. From this position you should be able to take your left hand off the club and touch your right knee.

The whole point of this is to properly coil or compress the body in the backswing so it can explode through the ball. The top of the backswing should be very uncomfortable because your body is contorted and twisted. Just as you cannot torque your arm in slow motion the same as it does when throwing a ball - you can't torque the body properly in slow motion either. The body does things at full speed differently, because of inertia, than it does in slow motion.

In order to strike the ball and not the ground 2' feet behind the ball you must retain lag. If you swing "at the ball" you'll hit it so fat, it's not funny. This takes practice but once you get it you'll have the best "ah, hah" moment of your golfing life.

What happens here is that you're putting the energy into the wind-up and then relaxing and letting the body unwind. Most people turn away and lift the club and then try to turn on the power. Just as your neck wants to return to neutral if you turn your head to the side, (it took energy to turn it and none to return it to neutral,) so does the rest of the body. Therefore, we'll store the energy by coiling the body and then let it return to neutral and beyond. This is what gives Cam that effortless power look.

Cam's left arm works like he's starting a lawn mower.
