My Top Tips for Buying Watercolors

My Top Tips for Buying Watercolors Hey everyone! In today's video I'm sharing some tips on how to save money when shopping for watercolors.

If you are planning on buying some watercolors, Jackson's are having a sale this week, till Friday, February 14th, 2020-

Tip#1
Use a classic metal tin. I have found these to be the most versatile in the long run. I love the 12 half pans size and the 24 ones. The ready made sets that come in these are usually expensive, but you can find empty tins easily on Amazon these days-

Tip#2
Introductory sets are a great way of trying new brands. Some brands have special color schemes. I do recommend only buying sets with colors you think you will use or are interested in trying out.

Tip#3
Tubes are the most economical, the larger, the less you will pay per ml. Copare brands and sizes. Tubes last years and years so if you think you will use the paint, get a large tube.

Tip#4
Try store/house brands like Jackson's own watercolors (their brushes are great too)-

Tip#5
Learn your pigments! Brands name colors in different names, so checking the pigment may save you from getting a duplicate (of course one pigment can be used to create many different colors and shades of watercolor, so again, check all the info).
Some pigments are a part of every brand's selection, and if you enjoy the formula, there's no reason to get an expensive version of it... I have found that I enjoy White Nights Ultramarine blue, and it costs a fraction of the cost of more expensive brands. Van Gogh's Lavender is fantastic, no reason to get Daniel Smith's version in my opinion, especially if you're not in the US.

A great (and very dangerous) resource is Jane Blundell's website. You've been warned.

Tip#6
Buy local! US brands are a good option in the US, European brands in Europe, and so on. Of course it's always fun to try new brands from different countries, but I would research and check for each brand's specialty colors or mixtures to make it worth the extra expense.
