New Year's Eve forecast - see if skies will stay clear for fireworks displays

New Year's Eve forecast - see if skies will stay clear for fireworks displays Britain will see in the decade with a largely dry New year's Eve - after weeks of rain and flood warnings.   On New Year's Eve the pounding rains that flooded large tracts of the country leading up to Christmas will be replaced by settled and dry weather .  While there will be short spells of rain during the day in the south west, the heavier cloud will have cleared come party time.  Across the south of England and Wales and in Scotland a light cloud covering will raise temperatures slightly, with 7 and 8C recordings expected in the south and Wales.  Scotland will be just a little chillier.  The Midlands and north of England will endure the coldest temperatures as the clouds drift away to provide a crisp, clear night's sky perfect for viewing fireworks.   Luke Miall, meteorologist at the Met Office , said: "It's not looking to be too bad a New Year.  "By New Year's Eve night towards midnight much of the country is going to be dry.  "There will be a fair amount of cloud, some clear spells. It won't be particularly chilly."  The weather forecaster described the temperatures as "average" for this time of the year.  On January 1 dry, fairly mild weather will ensure a seamless transition from the 2010s to the 2020s.  "On New Year's Day there will be some frost around first thing, mainly in northern areas," Mr Miall continued.  "It's looking largely fine. It will be generally dry weather for much of the country.  "There will be light winds, stronger in the north, and as the day goes on some wet weather across western Scotland.  "Temperatures will be a little cooler than the day before, but closer to where they should be, perhaps about 10C in the south, 7 to 8C in the north."  The first few days of the year will remain similarly settled and mild, with temperatures stuck in the middle single digits.
