Quickie Mulch for an apple coming up from seed

This apple is doing fine with zero irrigation. We are choosing to give it a little bit of mulch. We grew an apple tree from seed without any irrigation, and Jocelyn decided to give it a quick mulch of pine cones and pine needles that were laying on the ground nearby. Rocks make lovely border mulch, as they will hold in the moisture pretty well. And the wood, of course, will last longer than the more herbaceous chop and drop materials, and so will give it a better defined border for us to notice and not disturb it. Seeing as we don't irrigate, this little Apple sapling must have a very nice taproot finding itself some water!
