Does Protecting Myself Push My Spouse Away?

Does Protecting Myself Push My Spouse Away? Our live caller explains her husband has completely changed...and he’s threatening to cut her off from money and health insurance. She asks: “Is there any hope?” And, “Should I protect myself?”

Dr. Joe Beam explains when someone threatens you with finances, access to health insurance, or anything similar, he sees it as a necessity to protect yourself.

People think, “If I protect myself it’s a push- pushing my spouse away.” And yes, it can push your spouse away. However, you need those “pushes” if you need to protect yourself and your children.

Is there no hope for this caller? Not necessarily... Since she is in a particular situation at a particular time, things can CHANGE over time.

If she wants to keep standing, and believes in her heart that her husband is a good man, she can keep standing while ALSO having the resources to protect her and her children IF she needs to be protected.
