How Emery Could Set Up Arsenal Next Season, looking at the starting XI, formations and tactics. Having ended the season in pretty disastrous fashion, finishing outside the top six and losing the Europa League final to local rivals Chelsea, what can Arsenal do to improve in 2019/2020? The North London club have brought in Lille’s mercurial wideman Nicolas Pepe, Real Madrid playmaker Dani Deballos and secured a deal for talented young centre half William Saliba. They’ve also been linked to the likes of Kieran Tierney, Daniele Rugani and Ryan Fraser as they look to rebuild.

Unai Emery’s greatest sides have usually played a 4-2-3-1, with attacking full-backs providing width whilst the inside forwards come inside. Last season, Sead Kolasinac’s natural preference to play at wing-back rather than as a full-back and Arsenal’s lack of true quality in defence forced Emery to revert to a back five system, which never quite felt right. Their interest in Kieran Tierney suggests that Emery’s intention is to switch back to that 4-2-3-1 this season, and this could really see the side evolve tactically: Bellerin overlapping Pepe, Torreira screening the advancing full-backs, Ceballos sticking things together in the final third - you start to see how Arsenal can build their next great side.

In terms of trimming the fat in their squad, there are increasingly strong reports than Shkodran Mustafi could be on his way out. Whilst Arsenal could potentially be a man down given that William Saliba will spend 19/20 at his parent club St. Etienne, the fact that the side will be lining up with a back four rather than a back five will negate this to a big extent - as will the return of Calum Chambers. Laurent Koscienley has also been heavily moved with a link away, though. Other players that could potentially move on according to reports include Granit Xhaka, Nacho Monreal and potentially one of the side’s strike duo, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

What do you expect to see from Arsenal this season tactically, and where do you expect them to finish if they are able to land all of their key targets? Let me know in the comments!
