South China Sea : Philippines deploys military aircraft to secure 'territorial sovereignty'

South China Sea : Philippines deploys military aircraft to secure 'territorial sovereignty' The Philippines is one of the countries that are still discussing the region with China after the adoption of the nine dash line policy. Under the policy, China said several island chains within the borders of countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia.

According to the country's military, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) deployed three planes to take part in patrol duty in the South China Sea.

The inclusion of the aircraft is part of a wider operation to maintain its presence in the region.

Named under the Western Command, the operation will focus on what Manilla declared the "West Philippine Sea".

In a statement from PAF Wing West Tactical Operations, they said: "The Philippine Air Force has deployed three (3) US-211 aircraft for the Maritime Air Patrol (MARPAT) in the Joint Operational Area of the Western Command on February 24, 2020.

The air assets, which will be based at Wing West Tactical Operations, Antonio Bautista Air Base, will increase the operational tempo of WESCOM in securing the territorial integrity of the country in the West Philippine Sea.

Previously, the Philippines and China had talked about the sovereignty of the Spratly Islands.

The island chain is located off the coast of the Philippines in the South China Sea and has fallen in the nine dash line of Beijing.

Last week, Chinese coast guards and militias were deployed near one of the largest islands under Philippine control.

The defense secretary of the country, Delfin Lorenzana said: "They were there intermittently but the numbers differed."

Director of the Asian Maritime Transparency Initiative Greg Poling said China had "maintained a constant maritime militia" around the island of Pag-asa.

The Armed Forces of the Philippine Western Command said it was monitoring 275 Chinese Chinese ships around the island.

With an extraordinary Chinese navy, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has acknowledged that this is a fight that cannot be won by his country.

As a sign of his intention to become an ally for China, he also called for all hostile tensions to end China.

While he has sought to close ties with China, he confirmed this month that his country would end the Visit Force Agreement with the United States.

This pact allows the US to rotate its troops through Philippine military bases.
