What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease occurring when the immune system mistakenly attacks the joints instead of foreign substances such as bacteria and viruses. This causes inflammation in which the tissue that lines the inside of joints, the synovium, to thicken, leading to swelling and pain in the joints.
What are the causes of rheumatoid arthritis?
It is broadly agreed that rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease caused by an abnormal response of the immune system, and it is one of the culprits leading to inflammation and joint damage. Scientists haven’t provided any explanation for the dysfunction of the immune system but scientific evidence suggests that genes, hormones and environmental factors are involved.
