Hot axle being a major issue in train safety, measures are taken to check the axle temperature at STR nominated stations by Infrared pyrometers. But the current system does not take into account the time provided for cooling at station section or at Home signal, and there is no indication or method to assess hot axle in running condition. Also, IR pyrometers that are used during STR examinations are dependent on the radiation emitted by the axle, that depends on the emissivity of the surface. Thus, the results will not give the real picture of the absolute temperature of the axle. The Hot Axle Box Detection Label depends on the conduction and hence, will give a better picture of the dynamics of temperature throughout the sections. Once the temperature rises above 79 degree celsius it will irreversibly change its colour to black, which can be easily spotted by TXR staff during rolling-in and rolling-out examination or even by gateman or pointsman.
