To improve its amphibious capabilities in support of the Philippine Marine Corps, and also to boost its logistics support capabilities in overall support of the entire Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine Navy has embarked on the acquisition of the Strategic Sealift Vessel (SSV), which is part of the AFP Modernization Program Phase 3. This project supersedes the Multi-Role Vessel Acquisition Project that was started by the Arroyo administration, although it still involves the acquisition of a Landing Platform Dock (LPD) type vessel.
