They were supposed to be the answer to heavy congestion on Britain’s busiest roads - but, in the past five years 38 people have died on ‘smart motorways’ and reports of near-misses have increased by twenty-fold. We’re joined by Meera Naran who tragically lost her eight-year-old son Dev when a lorry crashed into the car he was travelling in, on a hard shoulder opened to traffic. We’re also joined by the President of the AA, Edmund King, who says the motorways are ‘not fit for purpose’.
