Is Fiber NECESSARY for a HEALTHY Microbiome?

Is Fiber NECESSARY for a HEALTHY Microbiome? 💩Do we really need fiber from plants to have healthy microbiome? In this clip from the podcast that I released yesterday with @chriskresser we discuss the lack of influence of fiber on alpha diversity of the gut microbiome. So often we are told that we must have plant fiber for a “healthy microbiome,” but is this really true? There are multiple studies, as we discuss in this video, that show that the removal of fiber in a carnivore diet does not decrease alpha diversity. Similarly, I have previously discussed interventional trials with fiber which do not show an increase in alpha diversity with its inclusion. It is also true that we do not need plant fiber to make short chain fatty acids. The impact of a carnivore diet on the gut is a fascinating topic, but there’s no good evidence that humans need plant fiber to have a healthy gut or microbiome. The thousands of people finding GI improvements eating a carnivore diet also argues that this way of eating is not harmful to the gut. What do you guys think? Do we NEED fiber for a healthy gut?👻
