A Chinese research team has suggested that the deadly new coronavirus may not have originated from the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in the central city of Wuhan that was the epicentre of the Covid-19 outbreak. The research team reportedly analysed 93 samples of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) sourced from 12 countries. Many of the people infected with the virus at the start of the outbreak had links to the seafood and meat market where wild animals were also sold. The Chinese team’s research questioned a theory that the virus jumped from wild animals to humans, and suggested that the location was merely a catalyst for spreading the coronavirus that causes Covid-19 disease, which has now claimed over 2,400 lives in a widening epidemic.
