In US news and current events today, an EF-1 tornado with 90 mph winds tore across a high school parking lot in Loris, South Carolina on January 13, 2020.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said the tornado developed near the school’s football field and continued onward for approximately 1 mile. Most of the damage was to trees and other structures, but there were no injuries reported.
Roughly 1,200 tornadoes occur in the U.S. each year. How does a tornado start? A tornado is caused when winds within a thunderstorm. Tornado strength is rated on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale and is determined by the amount of damage caused.
Researchers are still improving methods to track tornadoes. The available data on tornadoes only dates back to 1950 so it is unclear whether the climate crisis is affecting tornado occurrence. But studies have concluded that conditions that lead to severe thunderstorms are more likely in a warmer atmosphere.
