Rohit, who needed just 4 runs, reached 9000-run mark in ODIs in the very first over by picking a couple off Pat Cummins on the first two deliveries.
In the process, Rohit became the third-fastest batsman overall and second fastest Indian to complete 9,000 ODI runs. He also surpassed the likes of Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar.
Rohit took 217 innings to reach the landmark while his skipper Virat Kohli is the fastest to 9000 runs with 194 innings.
AB de Villiers is the second fastest, having reached there in 208 innings.
Besides Rohit and Kohli, the other Indians who have crossed the 9000-run mark are Tendulkar (18,426 runs), Ganguly (11,221), Rahul Dravid (10,768) Mahendra Singh Dhoni (10,599) and Mohammed Azharuddin (9,378).
Earlier, Steve Smith struck his ninth ODI hundred before India bounced back in the last 10 overs to limit the visitors to 286 for nine in the series decider.
