It opens at Nottingham Playhouse next month. Would-be ticket buyers are told online: “This production includes strong language and the following themes: racism, physical violence and abusive behaviour. “It also includes loud/sudden noises, theatrical smoke, and cigarette smoke. It may include flashing lights. This production will contain peanuts and bananas. If you have any severe allergies, please speak to the Box Office for advice on booking.” One Twitter user wrote: “This is just more box ticking and pandering to the hyper-sensitive, PC brigade.” But others pointed out the warnings could save lives. It comes as London’s Globe Theatre warns of “brutal portrayals of war, violence and murder” in its versions of Shakespeare’s Richard III and Henry VI. In 2017 English students at Cambridge University were given red triangle warnings about violence in The Bard’s scripts.
