Distinguishing Between Ripening Negative Karma and Delusion, with Ven. Robina Courtin

Distinguishing Between Ripening Negative Karma and Delusion, with Ven. Robina Courtin So I’ve been thinking about the examples of anxiety…
Yes.
Do we need to be able to distinguish whether it’s caused by negative karma or whether it’s caused by a delusion?
Yes, that’s exactly right, absolutely vital. And it’s hard to say sometimes. Often they talk about depression in some people. I remember one woman I knew — she was a student of Rinpoche’s — she lived in profound depression. Couldn’t get out of bed one morning, could never get out of bed, totally profound depression. But she was sweet and kind and compassionate and gentle; she didn’t seem self-centred. That’s past karma. If it’s there — clearly it was there, so it was triggered by some past karma. That can easily happen. A headache — it’s the same with a physical illness. You didn’t do anything wrong, you’re eating the best food, but suddenly a headache comes. That’s the ripening of some negative karma. It’ll be like that. Absolutely.
