'Nowhere With You' - Crichton Park Elementary School #CBCMusicClass

'Nowhere With You' - Crichton Park Elementary School #CBCMusicClass Crichton Park Elementary's submission to CBC's 2019 Music Class Challenge reflects a big part of Nova Scotia's history: with Joel Plaskett's permission, we've adapted his song "Nowhere With You" (which is set in our own city) as a traditional Gaelic milling song from Cape Breton!

Over a century ago, Gaels would come together to process their newly-woven wool cloth and make it weatherproof. Because the process was a long one, they would sing songs in rhythm with the milling, and tell stories to pass the time. It's like a cross between a kitchen party and shrinking your favourite sweater in the washing machine!

The idea for performing the song in Gaelic came from Abby and Ella Hanson, the daughters of Crichton Park teacher Shelayne Hanson. The girls are language learners through The Gaelic College in St Ann's Cape Breton and visit elementary schools as "Up With Gaelic", talking about Nova Scotia Gaelic culture and demonstrating aspects of song and dance from the tradition.

Grade 5/6 Abriel and Grade 6 Van Buskirk's students learned the Gaelic words from Ella and Abby and rehearsed in music class with Music Teacher Michael MacDonald.
