The Labour leader flouted cries to not make political capital out of the tragedy that claimed the lives of two young Cambridge graduates on Friday. Former students Saskia Jones, 23, and Jack Merritt, 25, were fatally stabbed during a prisoner rehabilitation event at Fishmongers’ Hall by Usman Khan. Corbyn posted tweet saying “It’s time for Britain to stop clinging on to Donald Trump’s coat-tails” along with a video of one of his speech slamming US foreign policy. The video featured images from war zones from around the Middle East as well as an image of what appeared to be floral tributes laid at the site of last week’s attack. In the clumsy post he appeared to be laying the blame for terrorism in Britain at the feet of President Trump, despite all the interventions he mentioned taking place before The Donald had even entered politics. Corbyn seemingly blamed the US and Britain’s interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria for stirring up ill will towards the UK. However Trump not only didn’t launch any of those operations but also stood on an anti-interventionist platform when he ran for office and was recently criticised for pulling troops out of Syria. The President arrived in the UK today ahead of Nato’s 70th birthday summit in London and Watford. Corbyn also accused Boris Johnson of being “the world’s leading sycophant” towards Mr Trump. His comments came the same day one of the victim’s dads, David Merrit, condemned the politicisation of the attack. The estates manager and Labour activist wrote in the Guardian that his son would be “livid” over the politicisation of his tragic death. He added: “Jack would understand the political timing with visceral clarity.” Usman Khan was out on licence when he stabbed a two people to death and injured three others while wearing a fake suicide jacket. He then made his way on to London Bridge - the scene of the 2017 terror attack which killed eight - but was eventually pinned down by heroes who tackled him with a fire extinguisher and a narwhal tusk. Armed police then shot him dead. Earlier today a vigil was held for the victims of the attack at Guildhall Yard. Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn and the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan were all in attendance at the event.
