As I'm sure you know, designing your own plans for building a shed, for example, takes a lot of time and you can easily get it wrong! One bad measurement can mean a waste of the hard earned cash you're trying to save by doing things yourself! I definitely have more consistent success now I use professionally designed plans. The steps are clear and the illustrations accurate and helpful. I'll tell you now that it's worth paying a little to a professional who has designed plans for building a shed over and over again so that you can get it all right first time!
Keep it simple
There are literally hundreds of plans for you to download from simple designs to mock houses with siding, shutters and stylish entrances. It's better to go with a simpler model, particularly if you're inexperienced. Have a good look around. Remember to think about how your shed will fit in with your house and other our buildings you may have. A good shed will last about 10 years so make sure that you won't get tired of the design you've chosen. A Taj Mahal replica might seem a good idea at the time but....
Planning and plans go hand in hand
Do some planning first. How many and what items do you intend to store? Are you finally going to find a home for your snow thrower and leaf blower? Lay it all out in the backyard so you know how big a shed you will need and give yourself some extra space for things to be added in the future. Then measure the area you intend to use for the shed so that you now have an idea of the measurements of a shed that meets your needs. Most quality plans come with a list of materials you will need, down to the last nail. That means that you can take it to the hardware store to get an idea of the cost up front. Most plans also come with a cut chart and if you take this to the lumber yard the guys there will be able to cut the lumber to the exact measurements of the plan. No worries about making mistakes there!
