Chris Sutton reveals staggering amount it would cost to sort out Man Utd Chris Sutton claims Manchester United would have to splash out £1billion to turn them into Premier League title challengers.   The Red Devils missed out on a top four place last season as they finished sixth - a staggering 32 points behind champions Manchester City .   United already trail early pacesetters Liverpool by 10 points after just six games this time around and Sutton reckons they would have to spend big if they want to compete with their rivals.   Sutton wrote in the Daily Mail : "How much would Manchester United have to spend to stand a chance of competing with Manchester City and Liverpool? I came to the conclusion it would take more than a billion pounds. Seriously.   "With Paul Pogba out injured, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded a midfield two of Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic at West Ham . I’m not sure that is even top-10 worthy. To compete for the big trophies you need big players and United don’t have those.  "What’s the solution to all this? I don’t think it is to sack Solskjaer. I’m not saying he is carrying it out well, but at least he has a plan. He is developing younger players, partly because he has no choice.  "Can United afford to spend more than half-a-billion pounds in a bid to become top-four competitors again? It didn’t work with Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. I’m not sure ripping up the manual and appointing a new manager is the answer."  United's woes continued as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat at West Ham on Sunday.  It was a lifeless display at the London Stadium, but Solskjaer maintained: "It's a good group to work with, they are determined.  "Sometimes along the road you're going to hit some bumps. This group is determined, they showed the desire we want. There's a good atmosphere in the dressing room and they've got their focus right.  "This group want to do what we are trying to do, we are working in training. There are key moments in games that can tip games in our favour.  "It might be a bad decision on a pass. But the attitude and desire is there. That's not the problem, it's the quality in our decision making and execution."
