This video will explain what Night Frights are about in birds. Night Frights are very common in Cockatiels in particular.
This is when the bird Spooks very easily when it is dark in the room or when they're sleeping.
There are so many things that can set them off at night and spook them.
Such as:
A LIGHT
A SHADOW
SUDDEN MOVEMENT
AN ANIMAL NOISE
ANOTHER BIRD HAVING A NIGHT FRIGHT
A SLIGHT BREEZE OF AIR
These are just a few examples.
So when this happens the bird will flap around in its cage uncontrollably in the dark and could possibly get very injured.
When this happens you need to turn on the lights and go to the bird and talk very softly to it or sing to it and bring it back to reality. Once the bird is calm you can turn the lights back down.
So it is always a good idea to have a little night light on for the bird and not cover the cage completely when you have a bird that gets Night Frights.
